On Nov. 11, 2019, the Danbury Police Department received a complaint involving the sexual abuse of a 12-year-old girl, which led to 33-year-old Juan Perez-Barbahona being identified as a suspect.

The allegations against Perez-Barbahona led to an extensive investigation by the Danbury Police Department’s Special Victims Unit, which determined that the sexual assault had been ongoing for several years.

During the investigation, a second 11-year-old girl was also identified as another alleged victim of Perez-Barbahona.

Police said that several attempts to locate Perez-Barbahona were unsuccessful. Immigration and Customs Enforcement later confirmed that Perez-Barbahona had fled the country just days after the initial complaint had been made to police in Danbury.

On April 22, 2020, an arrest warrant for Perez-Barbahona was requested by police and granted by the Danbury Superior Court.

This month, on Wednesday, March 10, police in Danbury received a notification from the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol that Perez-Barbahona was being detained in Corpus Christi, Texas, based on the extraditable warrant that had been granted last year.

According to police, on Wednesday, March 19, officers in Danbury took custody of Perez-Barbahona, transporting him back to Connecticut to face multiple charges.

Specifically, Perez-Barbahona was charged with:

  • Three counts of first-degree sexual assault;
  • Three counts of fourth-degree sexual assault;
  • Seven counts of risk of injury: sexual contact;
  • Seven counts of risk of injury: impairing the morals of a minor.

Perez-Barbahona is currently being held in lieu of a $250,000 bond. No return court date has been announced.
